Mode 7 drops S.O.S. Volume 2, bringing back more cult classic video games with dope rhymes and remixes
Mode 7 is back with the sequel to the recently released S.O.S. mixtape from January. The idea remains the same, spotlighting some niche and cult classic retro game soundtracks from over 30 years ago, but sometimes more recent than that.
In this collection things get real puzzle heavy as we got Super Puyo Puyo, originally only released in Japan. Then it’s the action packed take on Tetris, Blastris, from the Super Scope 6 collection. Then we get relatively futuristic with a remix of sounds from Meteos, originally on the Nintendo DS in 2005. I bought that game day one, and scratched the hell out of my DS.
The second half gets more eclectic with the poorly known and poorly playing SNES version of RPG game Drakkhen. Another obscure game, Kirby’s Japan Only Baseball, better known as BS Kirby no Omochabako – Baseball. Then round things out with another puzzler, but not the block dropping kind of puzzle. Mode 7 closes things out with the music of Kablooey AKA Bombuzal. Can you believe Drakkhen and Kablooey have the same composer, Hiroyuki Masuno. I didn’t even know that when the album came together.
